Champion of the Masses, also Champion of Piña

The President in Barong Tagalog

Ramon del Fierro Magsaysay, or Ramon for short, was the third President of the Third Republic of the Philippines during the 1950s. Magsaysay, hailed by his countrymen as ‘Champion of the Masses’, was commanding yet charismatic, and his grounded approach to leadership drew the public close to him. Robert A. Heinlein, author of the novel turned movie Starship Troopers, would even refer to him as an expert on psychological warfare because he was being the Secretary of National Defense after being Congressman and before becoming Head-of-State.

This particular political icon was also the first individual to introduce the Barong Tagalog in the Malacañang. In the Election of 1953, Magsaysay was elected president over the incumbent Quirino and was sworn into office with him wearing the Barong Tagalog, a first by a Philippine president. Can you say faccione? Winner!

The FOUR perspectives of Manila.

As I wake up, I gaze into the sky glaring at the clouds and smelling the wind.

Time goes by and a bright light touches both my eyes but it does not burn me.

Without warning, the sudden atmosphere becomes blurry and everything feels light and heavy at the same time.

The smoke clears up and everything turns gray as silence fills the world.

The Lady that screams First

Who says ‘Imelda’ doesn’t stand for ‘Immortal’? I would die to be called imeldific. Imelda Remedios Visitacion Romualdez, first lady of the infamous former President, Ferdinand Marcos, global icon for couture and high fashion, and a name that will be forever remembered by fashion enthusiasts and the like. Globally known as the woman who owns the most shoes (2700 pairs to be exact) and is sometimes referred to as the steel butterfly or iron butterfly for her debonair but strong strong “charm”. Without a doubt, she is manilanotvanilla.tumblr.com’s favorite beauty queen.

Presently, she is a congresswoman, jewelery designer, and grandmother.

Now begins a beautiful story of a commonplace that is not so common. It is known for its political families and their shoes. Nothing could be even more interesting. Manila, capital of the Philippines and capitol for quasi-development where people roam the streets of 6750 in Makati having not a penny in their pocket. Nonetheless, there are still those 154 families who walk the streets owning 80% of the country’s wealth whom insensitively buy precious gems for they can afford it. Not pretentious just unapologetic. The story starts here…
